Tibbs Halloween Extravaganza 2012
Sep. 2nd, 2012 11:48 amOkay, judging by the poll results, there are enough people interested in another round of Tibbs Halloween Extravaganza.
Yay! :D
Most people voted for just writing a story instead of doing a fic-a-thon (extra special shout-out to the awesome artists who said they'd draw/make manips/icons/etc and, of course, the cheerleaders!).
My suggestion as mod and organizer is to not offer a fic-a-thon, since only four people voted for it. Now, if you guys insist, I'd be happy to organize a mini-fic-a-thon just for you while the rest of the writers just write a fic based on whatever the muse tells them to. We still have enough time till Halloween, so organizing the mini-fic-a-thon wouldn't be a problem. I just personally don't think it'll make a lot of sense with just four or five people participating.
Of course, if you insist on writing a fic based on three or four prompts, I'd be happy to come up with a few spooky prompts, just for you! *shifty*
So...thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas? Complaints?

Date: 2012-09-02 05:12 pm (UTC)Okay, a fic-a-thon is basically a fic exchange. Everyone who signs up sends the organizer (me) two/three/four prompts that they'd like to see written, as well as a list of strengths and weaknesses ("I'm good at writing angst but I can't do humor/crack") and, if applicable, hard limits (e.g., no death or non-con). The organizer then matches the prompts with the writers' individual strengths/weaknesses/hard limits and sends out the prompts.
Example: A, B, C and D have signed up. They each send me their prompts and lists, so I know what they're willing and able to write/not write. Based on the information, I assign prompts from A to writer B, B's prompts to D, D's prompts to C, and C's prompts to A.
So, everyone has a bunch of prompts to choose from. Only one prompt has to be filled (though everyone's free to fill more *g*). Participants do not know who is going to fill their prompts (so, A doesn't know I gave A's prompt to B, etc) which means it's a huge surprise for everyone once the stories are posted.
These fic-a-thons are a lot of fun, though they do put pressure on the participants for the simple fact that they'd better write something or they'll have nothing to give to the person whose prompts they were assigned, and that is unfair to them because they, in turn, wrote something for someone else. You know? In such cases, a pinch hitter might step in and write something, though that doesn't really work when the posting period is just one day. Usually, fic-a-thons are huge, with a dozen or more participants, and the posting period is a week or longer, so a pinch hitter would have enough time to fill a prompt. That doesn't really work when the actual posting date is just Halloween though. *g*
Anyway, we did a fic-a-thon last year for those who wanted one, and everyone else could just write a story and share it on Halloween for the rest of us to enjoy, without the added pressure of having to deliver at all costs. Plus, if you don't work well with other people's prompts, fic-a-thons are difficult. I know some people can only write based on what their muse tells them to, so it's frustrating to receive prompts that just don't inspire you but you need to fill one of them. Generally though these things are a lot of fun to do. :)
...and now you're probably completely confuzzled... *g*
